I'm beginning to update my workshop on Funding for Nonprofit Start Ups and what have I found via Google? Nearly nothing.
Lots of articles and such on small business start ups. A decent amount of info on nonprofit start up topics, such as incorporating, recruiting boards of directors, and getting your 501(c)(3) status. But very little on how to raise the initial funding. And just about nothing on how to think about strategy and planning for how to raise the initial funding and how to do it in the future. Curious.
OK, to be fair, there is a lot on grantwriting, and that's what most people think is the first (and too many think is the only...) step. And there is help out there on events fundraising (but much of it misguided and incomplete). Hmmm. I'm a bit testy today.
But I found an Ask Kim Klein response that offers a useful, practical model for beginning to think and plan about the fundraising. Grassroots Fundraising Journal - Dear Kim Q&A Column Archive
More on this topic from me soon.
